Empty Bowls

Each year, our students participate in an Empty Bowls charity event as a service learning project.  Empty Bowls events are organized to help fight hunger, and our students focus on helping those in need in the Detroit area.  The project is a cross-curricular endeavor which blends everything from art and social studies to life skills and technology.  Students create ceramic bowls in their art class which are sold at the event.  They create and perform music with positive messages about fighting hunger and giving back to the community.

The annual event is held at the Detroit Boll Family YMCA in downtown Detroit.  Student bowls are sold as part of admission, and guests are served a selection of soups and breads donated by local restaurants.  All proceeds from the event benefit the local Gleaner's Food Bank.
